City of War: The Story of John Rabe

A true-story account of a German businessman John Rabe (Ulrich Tukur) German businessman and member of the Nazi party who saved more than 200,000 Chinese during the Nanjing massacre in 1937-38. The film opens with Rabe and his wife Dora (Dagmar Manzel) preparing to leave Nanking after 30 years, but when the Japanese bomb the city, Girl’s College director Valerie Dupres (Anne Consigny) and Jewish German diplomat Dr Rosen (Daniel Bruhl) persuade John to stay and use his influence to help set up a safety zone for civilians. The film won the Outstanding Feature Film, Best Costume Design, Best Production Design and Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role at the German Film Awards.
