Artists, with a focus on drawing in their practice, are invited to participate in a one day masterclass with Dutch artist and curator Arno Kramer, at The Model, on Tuesday, 31st October 2017 (10am – 5pm).
The objective of offering this masterclass in drawing is to focus on already existing works from the participating artists. Kramer asks that each artist bring at least 10 recent drawings, which can form the beginning of critical debate during the day. Critique will be offered on the works, as well as suggestions on how to continue making drawings from a new and interesting perspective. It does not matter what the specific content of the drawings is. Every subject or object as a starting point for work is welcome. The main concern is that the drawing has an autonomous quality and is an original piece of art, not a preparatory sketch for a painting or sculpture.
Kramer notes, “The autonomous nature of development in drawing is nearly a new phenomenon. You can think about it not only in content, but also in several techniques, collages and even in the size of the works. From this perspective it could also be interesting to talk about representation and presentation of drawings, as well as about research and reflection in general.
Arno Kramer Biography
Arno Kramer works as a visual artist in The Netherlands and Ireland. He has been exhibiting in Ireland since 1995. He has shown at Green on Red Gallery, Limerick City Gallery of Art, The Model, Ballina Arts Centre, Galway Arts Centre, The Mermaid Arts Centre, Crawford Gallery and at the Cavanacor Gallery. In Northern Ireland his work has been exhibited at Ormeau Baths Gallery, Millennium Court Art Centre and Fenderensky Gallery. He is also a regular visitor to Ballinglen Arts Foundation where he has been in residence and held a masterclass in drawing. Recent exhibitions in Ireland include High winds move slowly with sculptor Henk Visch at The Model, Sligo (2017).
Arno taught for 20 years at the AKI (Academy of the Visual Arts and Design) in Enschede, the Netherlands, and has been a guest teacher at art colleges in Ireland, Belgium, England, Scotland, and the USA. He publishes on visual arts and also writes poetry. He is currently the founder and first curator of the Drawing Centre Diepenheim in The Netherlands (Kunstvereniging Diepenheim).
