Curator's Talk: The Outsider

To mark the opening of Jack B Yeats; The Outsider The Model is organising an unmissable event for Yeats fans.

Two of the leading authorities on Jack Yeats will conduct an open conversation on the artist’s life and work. The celebrated artist, critic, and writer Brian O’Doherty will be in conversation with writer, curator and Yeats scholar Dr. Hilary Pyle.

Brian O’Doherty, one of Ireland’s most acclaimed artists on the international stage, was introduced to Yeats when the older man was living out his final years in Portobello Nursing Home. Brian became a regular visitor to Yeats’ bedside and fostered a friendship that lasted until Jack’s death in March 1957. Brian went on to have a hugely successful career in art and art criticism and wrote the highly influential book Inside The White Cube in 1976. Over the past fifty years Brian has continued to write about Jack Yeats’ place in Irish art history and has recently completed a major text on Yeats, which reinterprets his oeuvre, and will be published on the occasion of this exhibition.

Hilary Pyle is the former Yeats Curator at The National Gallery of Ireland and has written extensively on Jack B Yeats, as well as several other artists. Her work on Yeats includes the invaluable three-volume Catalogue Raissonne of the Oil Paintings, Jack B Yeats: A Biography, as well as catalogues of his watercolours, drawings, pastels and cartoons. Dr Pyle has presented several important exhibitions and lectures on Yeats works over the past twenty years.
