Cartoon Saloon Retrospective

This year Lightbox profiles the work of hugely successful Irish animation company Cartoon Saloon, producers of Oscar®-nominated The Secret of Kells.

A young wolf decides to confront his father. He had not seen him since he was a child. ‘Old Fangs’ has recently been selected for competition at the Annecy International Animation Festival in France this June.

Based on an Inuit folktale, From Darkness tells the story of a lonely fisherman who drifts into haunted waters in search of food and finds much more than he bargained for.

Multiple Directors
A 5 part series produced by Cartoon Saloon in conjunction with Sónta Productions for TG4 including 12 animated Gaelic songs as An Gréasaí Bróg, Tá Dhá Ghabhairín Bhuí Agam and Óro Sé do Bheatha Abhaile. All songs were produced by Iarla O’Lionard and Kieran Lynch. Contemporary artists such as Paul Brady, Nell Ni Chróinín and Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh have recorded some of the tracks and animation and the show premiered on Irish station TG4 over Christmas week 2009.
