CD Launch with Jazz virtuoso Mickey Nielsen
€15/€12 / The Model and Sligo Jazz Project is proud to present the CD launch of one of Ireland’s most highly regarded and sought after jazz musicians, Mike Nielsen. Mike’s latest CD, Acoustic Sound Recipes, contains original compositions by Mike Nielsen and explores his interest in improvisation, modern harmony, odd metre and the poetry of W. B. Yeats. He has assembled a stellar acoustic ensemble featuring Ellen Demos, voice; Brendan Doyle, clarinet and Shane O’Donovan percussion. Compositions are written and arranged to encourage individual expression and collective improvisation where traditions of jazz, classical, rock and blues meet traditional cultures.

Mike has played with leading international artists including: Larry Coryell, Kenny Wheeler, Paul Wertico, Dominique Di Piazza, and the celebrated Dave Liebman with whom he has toured Europe, New Zealand and Australia headlining the Wangaratta Jazz Festival, 2004. He performed solo guitar on same bill as the legendary guitarist John McLaughlin during his first visit to Dublin in 2008. As a composer and performer Mike has seventeen recordings to his credit including two with Dave Liebman. He was guest soloist with the RTE concert orchestra and has on two occasions and has written a number of commissioned scores.
Mike holds an LTCL in classical performance and an MPhil in Physics and Music which included the design of original microtonal guitars. As a lecturer Mike travelled Europe and the US teaching odd metre music in the early 90’s. In 2008 he developed a Masters in Jazz Performance Program in the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) for which he the director. Mike also directs the DIT Big Band.
