Con Brio presents: Classical Ceol

€20 / €18 and are available on the night. /

The Irish Chamber Orchestra embarks on its second tour of 2011 Classical Ceol(8-17 September) performing in venues in Limerick, Dublin, Trim, Clifden and Sligo. Back on the road, the ICO offers a kaleidoscopic range of styles blending the traditional with the classical to great effect.

Fiddler Martin Hayes defies description; like a modern-day Paganini, his intensity and soulfulness harnesses breathtaking technique and overflowing improvisations. With his long-time musical partner, Chicago-based Dennis Cahill, they have achieved the delicate balance of tradition and creativity. Together they join the Irish Chamber Orchestra under the directorship of Katherine Hunka in performing a diverse range of works with popular appeal.

Two traditional sets by Irish composer Dave Flynn feature. Music for the Departed celebrates untimely deaths through music while An Irish Farrago provides a snapshot of Irish tune composition spanning four centuries, from a haunting early 18th century air by Turlough O’Carolan, to a modern day reel byPeadar Ó‘Ríada. Grieg’s popular Holberg Suite Op. 40 for string orchestra is one of the most frequently performed works. Based on dance forms clearly reminiscent of the Baroque era, it is full of the spirit and lyricism which one expects from Grieg’s music. Katherine Hunka guides the orchestra through the musical soft spots and bursts of contrasts of Ginestera’s dramatic Concerto for Strings Op. 33 – anArgentinian work which culminates in a sublime finale. A traditional adaptation of Thomas Moore’s Last Rose of Summer by Hayes & Cahill also features.

Don’t miss Hayes, Cahill and Hunka in Classical Ceol fusion with the Irish Chamber Orchestra atUCH, Limerick (8 September), RDS Concert Hall, Dublin (9 September), Knightsbrook Hotel, Spa & Golf Resort, Trim (15 September), Church of Ireland, Clifden (Arts Week) (16 September) and The Model, Sligo, (17 September).

Tickets are €20 / €18 and are available on the night.
