Dublin City Jazz Orchestra with Guests John Riley and Marshall Gilkes (USA)
€15, OAPs/Students €10, Children (U-12) €5 / The Dublin City Jazz Orchestra, originally convened for an Electric Picnic performance, evolved out of weekly informal sessions into the most impressive big band performing in Ireland today. Led by the charismatic Ciaran Wilde, DCJO plays music from the 40s and 50s and exhilarating modern repertoire. DCJO features something for everyone: bluesy showstoppers from the powerful vocal cords of trombonist Paul Frost, virtuosic displays from a plethora of young soloists like Danny Healy, trumpet, Alex Mathias saxophone and SJP’s Phil Ware on piano. Featuring many of Ireland’s finest musicians, the DCJO will be joined at Sligo Jazz Festival by two world greats from our 2011 faculty:
Village Vanguard Jazz Orchestra drummer John Riley (NYC) has literally “written the book” and his educational text books are studied by thousands worldwide, plus he is widely regarded as the finest big band drummer in the world.
Germany based WDR Big Band trombonist Marshall Gilkes is widely regarded as one of the finest exponents in the instrument’s history. He has been a member of the Richard Bona Band, Edmar Castañeda Trio, Maria Schneider Orchestra, and the David Berger Jazz Orchestra. In addition he has performed with Billy Cobham, Dave Douglas, and the Village Vanguard Orchestra.
