Netnakisum
€15/€12 / *“A group with the witty, omnivorous musicality of the Mothers of Invention, played on cello, viola and violin… their chamber-punk meets Kate Bush assault on Britney’s ‘Toxic’ ought to be a number one single throughout the civilized world” *
Oz Hardwick, R2 Magazine, UK, 2010
The hills of Ireland will soon be very much alive with the sound of Netnakisum, a young Austrian string trio brimming with attitude. If saying their name is a challenge (before you reach for the dictionary it’s the German word for street musicians – spelt backwards), be warned that this genre-busting classical/folk/whatever ensemble takes no prisoners, careering helter-skelter from Straussian waltzes and foot-stomping drinking songs to Britney Spears covers and avant-garde jazz – with a hint of yodelling thrown in for good measure, of course.
All this adds up to an exhilarating live show, but lurking behind the group’s energy and irresistible joie de vivre are three very serious and accomplished musicians (and talented singers) who have already recorded several albums together and toured extensively in Europe, America and Asia. Their tightly improvised and often highly rhythmic original compositions provide the perfect counterfoil for the fragile beauty of classics such as Ravel’s Pavane pour une infante défunte. All in all, this is a feast for the senses.
Music Network tours provide a wonderful opportunity to see some of the world’s foremost musicians at affordable prices in venues around Ireland, and are presented in association with RTÉ lyric fm. Music Network is funded by the Arts Council. Further information is available from www.musicnetwork.ie or (01) 671 9429.
