Tony O’ Malley HRHA

Born 1913, Callan, Co. Kilkenny, Ireland
Died 2003, Physicianstown, Callan, Kilkenny, Ireland

Tony O’Malley was born in 1913 in Callan, Co. Kilkenny. In the 1930s and 1940s O’Malley worked for the Munster and Leinster Bank as well as serving in the Irish Army before severe ill health caused him to be discharged. It was during his convalescence following a lung operation in 1945 that O’Malley began to paint. He remained only a part time artist until the late 1950s when his work was accepted for the Irish Exhibition of Living Art and for the Oireachtas Exhibitions.

Throughout his long career O’Malley worked in Ireland, St. Ives, the Bahamas and Lanzarote. He was elected and honorary member of the RHA in 1989 and was conferred with the honour of Saoi Aosdána in 1993.
In his life time he held one man shows in the Ulster Museum, Belfast, Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin, Taylor Galleries, Dublin, Crawford Municipal Art Gallery, Cork and the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin.

Since his death in 2003, retrospectives of his work have been held at the Irish Museum of Modern Art and the Butler Gallery, Kilkenny, both in 2005.

His work is included in the public collections of the Arts Council of Ireland, Bank of Ireland, and Allied Irish Bank, and the Ulster Museum.
