George Campbell RHA

George Campbell was born in Arklow, Co. Wicklow, in 1917. Virtually self-taught, he began painting in 1941. He travelled widely and toured France, Italy and Switzerland in 1950 and Spain in 1951, where he returned to paint almost every year for six month periods. In addition to painting, Campbell also designed sets for the Abbey Theatre, founded in 1903 by W.B.Yeats, Augusta Gregory and Edward Martyn. He was also commissioned to make stained glass windows for numerous churches in Ireland.
He was appointed associate member of the RHA in 1954 and became a Full Member in 1964.
