Clara Christian, was an English still life painter.
In 1880 she met fellow artist Ethel Walker. The two women attended the Putney School of Art and then lived, studied, and worked together as fellow artists from about 1885. Christian owned two houses in Cheyne Walk, London. She had one of them converted into three studios, with a fourth in the back garden.
Amongst the characters in George Moore’s ‘Hail and farewell’ is the sensitively depicted ‘Stella’, actually Clara Christian, the painter had settled in Dublin when Moore returned to Dublin, and was his mistress for a number of years.
She married Charles McCarthy, an architect, and died tragically in childbirth in 1906.
