Description

Born in Portadown, County Armagh, Charles Lamb was the eldest child of John Lamb, a painter and decorator. While apprenticed to his father he attended Portadown Technical School and later took evening classes at Belfast College of Art. In 1917 Lamb won a scholarship to the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art where he found Seán Keating an inspirational teacher.

Keating’s influence can be detected in Lamb’s realistic style, his heroic depictions of the Irish peasantry and his fascination with the west of Ireland. In 1921 he settled in Carraroe, Connemara. A remote Irish speaking area, Carraroe was to be the subject of much his subsequent art and a place where many young artists, including Barbara Warren, came to visit him and to attend the summer schools he ran there.

Despite his deep affection for the west, Lamb continued to travel abroad. In 1926–7 he toured Brittany and in 1938–9 he visited Germany. Throughout his career he also exhibited work in Dublin, Belfast and the USA.

In this small painting, Lamb studies the colour and movement of swelling waves that he must often have witnessed off the western coast.
