Born in Dublin, Barbara Warren studied under Maurice MacGonigal at the National College of Art, in London, and in Paris, where she was a pupil of the Cubist André Lhote. Throughout her career she has frequently visited the west of Ireland, in particular Connemara where she painted with Charles Lamb in Carraroe, Co. Galway. It was in Carraroe that Warren met the artist Ann King-Harman with whom she later shared a studio on Pembroke Lane in Dublin (1). Nano Reid, Gerard Dillon and George Campbell worked in a studio nearby and Warren occasionally joined them for life drawing sessions. While Warren enjoyed the friendship of these artists and others, including Patrick Collins, she was most impressed by Nano Reid’s work which she believed possessed a truly ‘Irish spirit’(2).

Later, funded by a travel scholarship, Warren went to live in Connemara for six months. Like many artists before her, she was inspired by the rugged landscape and rural way of life in the west. During this period she lodged at Lettermullen with a widow and her five daughters. Girl with a Goose may have been inspired by her memories of the geese that the family kept for the pot.
