Hear ‘The Sinking of The Titanic’ in Sligo this weekend
This week marks the ninety-eighth anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic ship which set sail shortly before midnight on 14th April 1912 from Southhampton, England. The ship had been built at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast. Four days into the ship’s maiden voyage, the Titanic struck an iceberg and sank two hours and forty minutes later, early on 15 April 1912.
This weekend, the Sligo New Music Festival takes place at The Model and will feature some of Gavin Bryars ground-breaking works including ‘The Sinking of the Titanic’. The initial starting point for the piece was the reported fact of the band having played a hymn tune in the final moments of the ship’s sinking. All the materials used in the piece are derived from research and speculations about the sinking of the “unsinkable” luxury liner.
Tomorrow evening, as we open our doors to the public for the first time in over two years, you are invited to join us for the aptly timed performance of ‘The Sinking of The Titanic’ performed by The Smith Quartet at The Model.
Earlier this week, Irish Times journalist Rosita Boland also wrote a beautiful piece on the story of the Titanic and how she discovered it at boarding school.
Second Square to None’s blog also features ‘The Sinking of the Titanic’ on today’s podcast.
The opening concert tomorrow night has limited capacity and we would strongly recommend booking in advance. Tickets are available from The Model on 071 9141405.
