Reel entertainment at The Model’s Cinema

Lots of great news from IFI@TheModel for 2011. We have increased our screenings to four per week. Screenings are now every Wednesday and Thursday at 8pm and two weekend matinée screenings every Saturday and Sunday at 3pm.

Keep an eye out for our new cinema flyer, which you can also download here .

Our cinema programme for 2011 kicks off on Wed. 12 Jan. with 2010’s Grand Prix winner at Cannes. Of Gods and Men received four stars from the Irish Times. Xavier Beauvois’ award-winning French film, a powerful drama about a small cell of Cistercian Monks living the monastic life in Algeria’s Atlas Mountains. Set during the 1990s Islamic terror campaign, the brothers find their faith put to the test as their way of life becomes threatened.

‘Of Gods and Men offers a bewitching combination of beautiful introspection and deeply buried, imperceptibly escalating tension.’, writes Donald Clarke. This is one not to miss.

Also in January, back by popular demand, will be a one-off screening of The Pipe , winner of the best documentary at the Galway Film Fleadh 2010, The Pipe is a story of a community tragically divided and how they deal with a pipe that could bring economic prosperity or destruction to a way of life shared for generations. The Pipe is a film about the Rossport community and the Corrib gas controversy.

In February, there will be a one-off screening of the seminal Sixties film, Peeping Tom, a dark slice of voyeuristic erotica by acclaimed director, Michael Powell, admired by artists and directors alike.

Watch out for the film Monsters, which is just your regular semi-improvised, low budget, romance and Sci-fi road-movie! The title suggests a straight-ahead ‘creature feature’, yet Gareth Edwards’ enterprising debut manfully resists categorisation. Don’t be misled by the title, as this eclectic film is a surprising road-movie with a romantic twist and a few monsters thrown in for good measure.

IFI @The Model will also be screening Sophia Coppola’s Somewhere, a witty and discreetly poignant companion piece to Lost in Translation and Matthieu Almaric’s On Tour, where this much-loved French actor won Best Director at Cannes for this loose and intimate portrait of a group of American ‘new burlesque’ dancers doing the rounds in provincial France while their manager (Amalric, himself) struggles to keep it together. Starring such deliciously named characters as Mimi Le Meaux, Dirty Martini, Roky Roulette and Kitten On The Keys.

Also screening will be the final installment of the Swedish thriller – an adaptation of Steig Larssen’s best-selling book, The Girl who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest and the genre-defying movie, The Arbor, and lots more goodies.
