Free short film programme at The Model cinema this springtime

Grab a coffee and see a freebie short film at The Model Cinema on Saturdays at 2.30pm this springtime.

Shorts@TheModel is a new programme of diverse short films from up-and-coming Irish filmmakers, which showcases the sheer diversity and creativity in contemporary Irish film-making and animation.

All Shorts@TheModel screenings are free; this programme is funded by the International Fund for Ireland. Each short film will be have a duration of 15-20 minutes.

We will also screen short films from up-and-coming Sligo film-makers including Anthony Cullen of Lug Media and Mike Guckian of Sligeach Films.

Other films to be screened include Oscar-nominated short The Crush, (screened 12 March) featuring Sligo actress Olga Werhly, and Small Change by Cathy Brady, winner of this year’s Best Short Film at the Irish Television and Television Awards and screened in The Model Cinema on 26 March.

Crossing Salween is a mesmeric short film based on a short story by Gary Moore and produced through the Irish Film Board ‘Signatures’ Scheme in association with Red Rage Films (screened 19 March) and it tells the story of a young girl, Ko Reh in the Karen state of Eastern Burma. On surviving the massacre of her family, she has to make the arduous journey through the horrors of the Burmese jungle. Her late father’s enduring love and his last promise has given her a spirit guide to shepherd her through the jungle across the river.

Also screening is the highlight of the recent Jameson Film Festival, David O’ Reilly’s, The Eternal World. This is a dark, twisted and hilarious animation from the enfant terrible of Irish animation.

Tipped as a director to watch, Juanita Wilson’s Oscar Nominated short The Door, will also be shown on 26 March. Juanita’s debut feature-length film, the haunting and visceral As If I am Not There, will also screen at The Model cinema on March 31st, and be followed by a post-screening discussion with the director and a accompanying panel.

Also look out for treats from Darklight and Northern Ireland Screen.
