Against the backdrop of the Cold War, the US State Department sends ‘jazz ambassadors’ Louis Armstrong, Nina Simone, and Duke Ellington to Congo, a newly independent, resource-rich African nation, to deflect attention from the CIA-backed coup that would lead to the assassination of Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba. In the months that follow, drummer Max Roach leads Maya Angelou in a protest at the United Nations. Belgian director Johan Grimonprez’s bravura cinematic essay, drawn from a wealth of archival footage, newsreels, testimonials, and newly uncovered home movies, won the Special Jury Award for Cinematic Innovation at the Sundance Film Festival.

Once top of his class as a child, M now wastes his days gaming and lives off his mother. When his cousin Mui inherits a large fortune after dutifully caring for their ailing grandfather, M decides to become carer for his maternal grandmother. She has been diagnosed with terminal cancer and he hopes to be rewarded once she passes away.

Despite his usual indifference to his family, M’s selfishness begins to dissipate in the face of his grandmother’s vulnerability and failing health. What follows is at times a greedy family farce, but also a feel-good, sunny, gracious portrait of family life. It’s a sentimental journey to redemption that is inspired by a true story. Don’t forget to bring your tissues!

Nickel Boys

Thu. 20 Feb. 2025, 8pm

Director: RaMell Ross
Stars: Ethan Herisse, Brandon Wilson, Daveed Diggs, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor
Info: 140 mins | USA | 2024 | Cert: 12A

Florida, the 1960s. African-American teenager Elwood is sent to the Nickel Academy reform school after being falsely accused of car theft. There, he meets and befriends fellow inmate Turner. Together, the boys dream of freedom as they attempt to endure the abuses inflicted upon them by the school’s cruel officials. The two teenagers’ shared experiences create a bond that will have ramifications for decades to come.

In this extraordinary adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s novel, director RaMell Ross boldly tells the story almost exclusively from the first-person perspectives of the two main characters. It’s an audacious formal gambit that pays off to stunning effect: this is a vital reckoning with history and one of the best American films of recent years.
