THE GEMINIANI ENSEMBLE
with Zoe Brookshaw, soprano
Baroque CantatasIn this programme of French baroque music, soprano Zoe Brookshaw sings dramatic cantatas by Clerambault and Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, with the Geminiani Ensemble (Alison Bury, baroque violin, John Dornenburg, bass viol and Malcolm Proud, harpsichord) joined by Miriam Kaczor, flute. They also play instrumental works by Marin Marais and Leclair.

MARIA CHRISTINA CLEARY
Tablatures: alternative musical notations
Tablature refers to musical notation systems where pitch and rhythm are described not by notes on the five-line staff but by indicating the physical gestures used when playing an instrument. Maria, a professional harpist, will demonstrate this fascinating subject with examples from Renaissance and Baroque tablatures and share her current research on a Spanish harp manuscript.

French Chamber Music
of the time of Louis XIV and Louis XV
The Geminiani Ensemble (Alison Bury, baroque violin, John Dornenburg, bass viol and Malcolm Proud, harpsichord) present a delightful and varied programme of music by Marin Marais, d’Anglebert and Leclair - dance suites, laments, and Marais’s famous evocation of the bells of a Paris church.

A CORTE MUSICAL
Mediterranea
The Swiss ensemble A Corte Musical, founded in 1998, and dedicated to the rediscovery of undeservedly forgotten composers of the past, have acquired an international reputation in the performance of early music, both at leading festivals and in their ten CDs. In this lively and varied programme with soprano Alice Borciani they take us on a journey along the Mediterranean shores from Portugal to Italy, with songs of love and sorrow, madness, passion and repose, composed in the 16th and 17th centuries.

GAYNOR POWER WALSH
Airs and Grounds
Three virtuosic exponents of three different musical styles - Marja Gaynor, violin, David Power, uilleann pipes, and John Walsh, guitar - explore the edges and affinities of baroque, traditional Irish and flamenco, in a programme of new arrangements and improvisations. Ranging from O’Carolan to Purcell, Telemann to Hyland, with traditional tunes in the mix, this original and eclectic performance appeals to a wide audience.

MICHAEL BURTON AND ROD ALSTON
William Herschel
Prior to the concert of his music which follows, Professor Michael Burton and Rod Alston introduce us to William Herschel the astronomer, his achievements and connections to astronomy in Ireland, and to William Herschel as musician and composer in his earlier career.

William Herschel
While Herschel is famous as an astronomer, his career as a musician and composer is less well known. This programme will give an insight into his musical dimension with several of his orchestral works composed around 1760, together with pieces by his friends and fellow Germans who were in England at that time - Carl Abel and J C Bach

A CORTE MUSICAL
Il Canto della Sirena
Music of charm, seduction and despair
The myth of female water-creatures with power to seduce men to their destruction has been present in many cultures. In this concert, based on their award-winning CD released in 2020, A Corte Musical with sopranos Alice Borciani and Annie Dufresne explore the early music repertoire which drew inspiration from these fabulous creatures, representing the conflict of temptation and resistance, eternal joy and extinction.
