Tim Doyle, Uilleann Pipes | Sligo Baroque Orchestra
We have a very special IMA in store for you this coming month: A collaboration of Sligo Baroque Orchestra and uillean piper Tim Doyle.
It is a well known fact that there are many parallels between Baroque and Irish Traditional Music, with Irish harpist Turlough O'Carolan from Co. Roscommon at the forefront of composing traditional music that has been heavily influenced by Baroque composers of his time.
Sbo and Tim Doyle will perform a couple of compositions by O'Carolan, but have taken marrying Baroque music with the Irish Tradition a step further, re-arranging concerti from the early 18th century for uillean pipes as the solo instrument. Well known and less well known composers have been chosen in this collaboration, with Tim taking the solo parts usually played by a violin, or a trumpet, or in the case of French composers Boismortier and Corrette by “muzette”, a set of small bellow blown bagpipes, very similar to the Uillean pipes.
Tim Doyle has toured extensively with Comhaltas Ceoltoirí Éireann, performing at state events in Cuba, Brazil, Canada and Britain. He was a member of the National Folk Orchestra from 2015 to 2022 during which time he performed for the official state commemoration of the 1916 Easter Rising at the RDS and at London’s Barbican Centre as well as for the visit of Pope Francis at the Phoenix Park in 2019. He recently finished a month long tour of ‘NightLight’, a show designed for audiences between 0 – 12 months with early musicians Eamonn Sweeney (baroque guitar) and Kate Hearne (recorder and cello) and theatre director Anna Newell.
Tim holds a BA in music composition and an MPhil in music and media technologies from Trinity College Dublin. He composes music for both traditional music and contemporary classical music ensembles and is currently collaborating with the Crash Ensemble on a new piece for Uilleann pipes and electronics, to be premiered at New Music Dublin, 2025.
Informal Music Afternoons are a series of monthly events, presented in partnership with Sligo Baroque Orchestra, where an eclectic mix of music is performed in a welcoming format in The Model’s Atrium space. The Informal Music Afternoon is an ideal way to spend a calm Sunday afternoon. The idea behind this event is to make classical music accessible for all, by means of an informal concert with a relaxed atmosphere in a cafe-style setting. Musicians perform classical works in addition to a non-classical section – often folk, traditional or jazz.
Ósta@TheModel will be open from 12 noon serving refreshments and a selection of lite bites. The concerts start at 1pm, but we recommend coming at 12.30pm so you can enjoy a coffee or a glass of wine from the wonderful café prior.
