12.00     Introduction to Baroque Music

An informal and interactive opportunity to learn about baroque music with members of Sligo Baroque Orchestra, to hold and play the instruments, and to ask questions.

Location: The Model Theatre

19.00     Festival Opening Reception

All festival-goers and friends are warmly invited to the launch of the 24th Sligo Festival of Baroque Music, with music and refreshments, prior to the opening concert.

20.00     Collegium Marianum: Heavenly Pleasures

The renowned ensemble from Prague, under Jana Semerádová, play J S Bach's Suite No.2 BWV 1067, his cousin Johann Bernhard Bach's Ouverture No.3, and arias from J S Bach's cantatas with soprano Kristýna Vylíčilová.

From cuckoos and nightingales to contemplative partitas and stately chaconnes: this concert presents rare 17th century masterpieces of virtuosity, innovation, and style, for violin, cello, theorbo and harpsichord.

18.00     Collegium Marianum: Boemo Furioso with Miriam Kaczor (flute)      

In the closing concert, Irish flute virtuoso Miriam joins Jana Semerádová and our guests from Prague in a programme ranging from Vivaldi's concerto for two flutes to works by his contemporaries  – Reichenauer and Brentner in Bohemia, Quantz and Orschler in Germany – who were all masters of the instrument.
