The Toy Theatre is a visual art, drama and multi-skills learning programme for schoolchildren in 4th, 5th and 6th class – designed to develop skills in drawing & painting, construction & design, theatre-making and digital technology. In 2021/22, 16 primary schools throughout County Sligo participated in the programme, which was delivered virtually into their classrooms. The project was developed and facilitated by Marc Mac Lochlainn, educator and artistic director of the internationally renowned children’s theatre company Branar Teatar do Pháistí. Pupils collaborated in small groups to design and construct their own miniature theatre sets. Inspired by the painting The Toy Theatre, by Jack B Yeats, they created their own original plays and stories which they filmed and directed. A selection of the filmed work was submitted by participating schools which can be viewed here at Toy Theatre Showcase. The Toy Theatre was created by artist Marc Mac Lochlainn and his creative team at Branar Téatar do Pháistí. The painting The Toy Theatre by Jack B. Yeats can be viewed at The Niland Collection online archive by clicking here.
The programme was developed in partnership with Branar Teater do Pháistí and is funded by The Community Foundation for Ireland. The schools portal is password protected and can be accessed by participating schools only.
